It is one of <a href=\"https:\/\/androscogginlake.org\/alic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/AIS-Unwanted-Poster-2024-FINAL-outlined4print.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maine\u2019s Most Unwanted Invasive Aquatic Plants<\/a>. Since that discovery, both 30 Mile and ALIC have been \u201call hands on deck\u201d in attempts to eradicate this invader.<\/p>\n<p>The type of variable milfoil in our lake looks like a bright green bottlebrush, with somewhat thick, reddish, stems.\u00a0 Variable milfoil spreads rapidly. This in turn can cause a decline in property values and tourism. As with other invasive aquatic plants, variable milfoil can outcompete native aquatic plants for resources, thereby reducing biodiversity and altering the balance of the entire ecosystem (food web). They mark every plant found with a buoy and then work with trained divers to remove the plants carefully by hand. ALIC's <a href=\"https:\/\/androscogginlake.org\/alic\/programs\/\">Eyes on the Water<\/a> volunteers support these efforts throughout the summer, as well as surveying all other areas of the lake where aquatic plants are likely to grow.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-1436-6-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div class=\"panel-cell-style panel-cell-style-for-1436-6-1\" ><div id=\"panel-1436-6-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"9\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p style=\"text-align: left;\">ALIC\u2019s partners include the 30 Mile River Watershed Association (30 Mile), the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Lake Stewards of Maine (LSM), and the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (DIFW)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-1436-7\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-1436-7-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell panel-grid-cell-empty\" ><\/div><div id=\"pgc-1436-7-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell panel-grid-cell-mobile-last\" ><div id=\"panel-1436-7-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_siteorigin-panels-builder panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"10\" ><div class=\"so-rounded panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-1436-7-1-0\" ><div id=\"pl-w672d2125d0ce3\"  class=\"panel-layout\" ><div id=\"pg-w672d2125d0ce3-0\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-w672d2125d0ce3-0-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-w672d2125d0ce3-0-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Surface Use Restriction<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-w672d2125d0ce3-1\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-w672d2125d0ce3-1-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-w672d2125d0ce3-1-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"1\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the request 30 Mile, the DEP and DIFW ordered a temporary Surface Use Restriction (SUR) in the cove, closing the infested area. A major purpose of the SUR is to prevent spread of this plant in Androscoggin Lake and to other lakes. Learning what belongs there and what doesn\u2019t is just the first step.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Learn what different aquatic plants look like so you\u2019ll be able to recognize and report anything suspicious that you spot while on or in the lake.<\/li>\n<li>Follow the practice of \u201cClean. Drain. Dry.\u201d This not only helps with stopping the spread of plants, but also with draining bilge water where plants and other invasives (such as zebra mussels or spiny water fleas) can hitch a ride.<\/li>\n<li>Inspect your boats, both before entering and after leaving the lake.
